Hi Pete, The extrusions would no doubt be stiff, but I would think heavier than the hat section stringers. The hat section stringers on my Sonerai were stiff enough to resist the pull of the fabric when I covered it last summer. To me, 5 ounces for any metal component 8 feet long is amazing. They were cut with tin snips, drilled, and mounted with a little safety wire to the standoffs. Very fast, easy and effective.
Your wings are looking great Pete - keep it up!

My neighbor said it will probably only make left hand turns. With my handy dandy wing holder I'll be able to install the wings by myself.

This will allow me to drill the holes without help. By the way, it is the Right Wing

Thanks Tom. I'm not setting any records. Took me a couple days to do the struts on the first wing. Probably only take me TWO days to do the second

Looking good Pete. Just curious, why the rounded wingtips. Going for the Cub look? Are you going to change the shape of the empennage too?

Thank you Mark. The rounded wing tips are because I want to make the plane look more like a classic perhaps like a Heath Parasol. The Skylite is a very modern looking plane. Just personal choice. Empennage? We'll see.

Ed, do you have any concerns about the Skylite airframe being robust enough to handle a 1/2 VW? Do you know if anyone has done it? Besides being somewhat heavier it's my impression that the vibration level and power pulses are somewhat stronger than a 2 stroke, although it may just be a lower frequency.
Thanks,
--Mark

Mark, I have no concerns as to the structural integrity of the airframe, if fitted with a two cylinder VW...Probably a dozen Skylites have been built and flown with the VW or Mosler based engines. Several of these people ended up switching to two-stroke power. I am concerned, however, that the pounds of thrust with the tiny propeller is a bit inadequate. As well, the two cylinder VW or Mosler type engines weigh 10, and in some cases, 20 pounds more than the little Rotax 277 engine, which uses a gearbox, swings a 60" diameter, 28 inch pitch prop, and gave me 190 pounds of thrust. The Twin VW I had swung a 54 " diameter, 28 inch pitch, and put out 145 to 150 pounds of thrust. With these little draggy ultralights, propeller 'disk area' is where its at!!

Mark, this is not my grandma's 1/2 VW. It is built by Scott Casler puts out 45 HP with 210 lbs of thrust. It can swing a 60" prop but prefers 58" to get this climb. Watch this video of the Legal Eagles @ the Reklaw, Texas 2012 fly in. I was there and witnessed this performance. The Legal Eagle is comparable to the Skylite. If nothing else listen to the beautiful exhaust tone. The Legal Eagles are very successfully marketed with these engines. The good part starts 2 minutes into this video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tP3EkH6r48

First time both wings are installed. Drilled rear strut fittings with wings in place. I have to finish welding the rear strut fittings since I just tack welded them.
