They are all favorite, some just more favorite than others!....Share with us your memories of small grass strips where you may have learned to fly, or where you are flying today...... The runway markers, the hangars, the fuel pumps, the 'goodies' in the hangar loft, and the 'smell' of the hangar shop. And the airport Cat or Dog. These are all things that may trigger a good old memory of a place in your past, or maybe your present.......Ed F.

Well, that would have to be Muntzel Williams farm strip about 5 miles SW of KOSH (its right before Fiske on the railroad tracks). Its an 1800' grass strip. Every Saturday morning, there is a mini fly in. If the weather is nice, there are usually about 20 planes there. The rules are that you bring a treat, Huntzel provides the coffee. They have been working on a Buttercup for the last 6 years or so. Its the only grass strip I have taken my Sonerai I in and out of

There are many that bring fond memories but Wynkoop field at Mt Vernon,Ohio was my original "home" strip. Many of the hangars were build in the 40's so it just has that feel only time can give a place. There are plenty of toys hidden away, some in converted farm inplement barns others in rusted tin roof open hangars. Plenty of homebuilts as well as antiques and classics. My Hatz was based there as well as my Dad and Uncles Smith mini and Baby lakes. There is a grove of trees mid field that is great for watching the activities during flyins. It also is used for camping and cooking out and has a shelter with plenty of picnic tables. Great place! Stop in and tell Brian hi. For years we would all gather around sunset, sitting in a single row along the main hangar, grab a 25 cent bottle of pop, look out across the field as the sun set and watch as the new fancy runway lights come on, note the time "they came on tonight" and then say goodnight. Oh what simple wonderful times!

South Omaha airport. FOB was Harry McCandless. I learned to fly there. I also had my Champ there. There were several B-25's at the south end of the airport. They were there for years. Eventually thy were sold and flown or trailered out. I was facinated with a Bamboo bomber that was hangered there. The airport is gone now. but I used to love hanging out at that place. 2D7...Beach City, Ohio. They have a beautifully maintained strip, and host one of the the largest and most diverse fly-in breakfasts in Ohio (Father's Day). Their pilots group (Beach City Area Pilots Association) is active and there's usually something going on weekends and evenings.

Hi Jim, I dropped in one evening, in my Hatz, to Beach City a long time back! I was headed to Barbers a day early for the T craft fly in, hoping to spend the night with the Pavliga's and see Franks new, at the time Piet. It got a little too dark as I rounded the corner of Akron so i popped into Beach City. Great planning! I decided to just sleep under the wing and head on in the morning. Bill Crone, as I learned, was working on his Stearman that night so I jumped in to help, or get in the way! As it turned out, he lived on the strip and offered their spare bedroom for the night. Nice folks. The next morning we Flew formation to breakfast. Watching through my struts and wires as he took off, seeing the morning dew swirl in the prop blast and fan from the tires with tall corn as a back drop still sticks fondly in my mind!

Oldernut Dave Nielsen Dave: I used to fly out of the old Council Bluffs airport and Harry McCandless was the FOB operator there too. I took my check ride from Don Bonacci at the North Omaha airport and had a Luscombe 8E based in Council Bluffs. That was in the early 1960s and CB and N Omaha were grass then. I suppose Harry is no longer living now. Are you still in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area? I'm in Oklahoma now. Don DeWitt

My favorite is Asheville Air park. Located a few miles west of town. It was red clay. Dusty when dry and a mess when wet. Went to work there in June of''47 just after soloing at the municipal airport. The FBO had two factory new Champs, a J-3 and a Waco UPF-7. Within a year I had my Private ticket and checked out in the Waco. Hauling passengers in that Waco, two at a time, out of that 1600 foot dirt strip was a blast for a kid who was still in high school. That place is now an industrial park. Flying was less complicated and a whole lot more fun then.

I fly out of Kittie Hill (77T), about 8 miles from my home in Leander, TX. There are 3 sod runways, the longest of which is 3450'. Because of the drought, they are more dirt than sod right now. It's nice to have a choice of runways in my Kitfox when a nice Texas breeze is blowing. For many years there was an annual Texas BBQ in June put on by our resident A&P, Joe Sills. The BBQ hasn't happened in the last couple years because of the runway wear and tear and the economy but every now and then someone will announce a hangar party on the Kittie Hill Yahoo Group. I've spent slot of time in my hangar lately working on my annual and my Skylite project and rarely do I not get a visitor or two. More than one work session was discontinued on account of beer.

Welcome Pete! I have a good friend who bases out of Kittie Hill. Brett, he has a Cessna 140, good guy, new SAA member and would love the comradery. Pete majored his engine a few years back. A lot of toys there, on a visit a few years back we rented stole or barrowed a j-3 a played around the area awhile. Howard and Cynthia have a Luscombe there also. They got married at Blakesburg at the Antique fly in several years ago. Hopefully you all can cheer a sunset there together soon. Skybolt Ron still have his cannon?

About 45 nm NW of Oshkosh is Centeral County Airport (68C)......a complex of three grass runways. They serve lunch every Friday at noon for $8 a person. It is considered a supper club and it costs about $12 a person to join but it's for life. 150-200 typically show up by air or car. Fly in early and participate in the spot landing contest and the winner eats for free.!!
In the winter they don't plow the field so the locals break out the skis. Haven;t had a chance to witness the winter.
Check out their website. Low n Slow Dave

Howard and I have shared more than a couple adult beverages @ our hangars after a day working on our planes. Don't know Brett or Ron. My hangar is the nearest to the approach end of 17, center of 3 T hangars facing runway 17/35. I'm a Hatz Fan too. Wish I had a light sport Hatz.
